About the Object
In this abstract Cubist sculpture cast in plaster and gilt with gold, no two views are the same. The sculpted forms twist around a central axis, recalling and reversing the gesture of Umberto Boccioni’s Development of a Bottle in Space, which he first sketched in 1912, and began casting in in 1915, including a 1931 cast in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
Additional Information
The Baltimore Museum of Art holds an early version of Spiral Rhythm from 1915, which is not gilded but has an ivory glow to its surface. The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden has one of three bronze casts done in 1958-59, of the enlarged sculpture in its collection.Â
