About the Object
In Live Free or Die, Danh Võ reconstructs the American flag using stacked American ash logs and 13 steel stars referencing the original 13 colonies of the United States. By transforming a familiar national emblem into a rough and fragmented structure, the work emphasizes instability and imperfection rather than patriotic unity. Created amid ongoing political divisions in the United States, the work reflects on nationalism, democracy, and the shifting meanings of American identity.
Commissioned by the Vilcek Foundation, New York, NY, 2025.
