The Vilcek Foundation and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation are pleased to announce an open call for nominations for the 2022 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare. Nominations will be accepted through January 24, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

The Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare

The Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare recognizes immigrant healthcare professionals whose work demonstrates an outstanding commitment to humanistic and community-centered care. The 2022 award includes a commemorative heart-shaped trophy and an unrestricted cash award of $10,000.

Eligibility Criteria

Nominees must have been born outside of the United States to non-American parents, and must work professionally in healthcare, medicine, or public health. Candidates’ professional work should demonstrate their commitment to humanism. The Arnold P. Gold Foundation defines humanism in healthcare as being characterized by a respectful and compassionate relationship between physicians, and reflective attitudes and behaviors that are sensitive to the values and experiences of others.

To be eligible, nominees must be based in the United States, and intend to continue their career in the United States. Full eligibility criteria are available on the Gold Foundation’s website, but eligible nominees must identify as one of the following:

  • Naturalized citizen or permanent resident (green card holder) of the United States
  • H-1B or O-1 visa holder
  • E-4 visa holder with a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
  • Asylee or an asylum seeker with a valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
  • Recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)

Nomination Procedure

Nominations may be submitted via a form on the Arnold P. Gold Foundation website. Nominators will be required to answer short questions and submit a copy of their selected nominee’s CV or resume, and to write two essays regarding the candidate and how their work aligns with the mission and values of the Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare.

Nominators are encouraged to alert their nominee of their nomination.

Review Process and Announcement

All nominations will be reviewed after the close of the open-call period. Nominees will be reviewed by a panel of distinguished public health experts appointed by the Vilcek Foundation and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The recipient of the 2022 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare will be announced in June 2022. The award will be presented at the Association of American Medical Colleges’ annual meeting in November 2022.

Past Recipients

The Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare was established in 2019 to celebrate the shared values of the Vilcek Foundation and the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. The inaugural award was bestowed on Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha for her leadership in the discovery and mitigation efforts regarding lead contamination in the public water supply in Flint, Michigan. The 2020 award was given to Dr. Vivek Murthy, 19th and 21st Surgeon General of the United States, for his humanistic approach to addressing public health crises in the United States. In 2021, the Vilcek-Gold Award was given jointly to Dr. Denisse Rojas Marquez and Dr. Jirayut “New” Latthivongskorn. Rojas Marquez and Latthivongskorn received the award for their leadership with Pre-Health Dreamers, and for their advocacy on behalf of undocumented immigrants.
