About the Object
This sculpture features two oil barrels stacked atop one another. The top piece is wrapped in fabric which is weighted down by lacquer. The oil barrel at the base is left bare. The sculpture is formatted to compare and contrast the oil barrels before and after wrapping, prompting the viewer to question the object’s meaning before and after it is altered.
Additional Information
Before Christo and his partner Jeanne-Claude expanded their wrapping technique to create large-scale outdoor installations, they created many sculptures by wrapping everyday objects such as furniture and household items. See Wrapped Payphone (VF2017.04.01) and Black Package (2012.10.01) also in the Vilcek collection.
