About the Object
In this cubist landscape, the leafless tree featured in Tree, 1921, appears on the left-hand side, its form balanced by the curve of a snake-like form on the right. In the upper-right a Coliseum-like structure stands out among the planes of color that Davis textured with line.
Additional Information
In 1942, Davis revisited several 1921 paintings, rethinking the compositions and the relationships between color and structure. He reworked Garden Scene first in a sketchbook for a new painting, which he initially called Arboretum #2, ultimately titling it Ursine Park, 1942, (present location unknown). Throughout his career, he would mine his earlier art as his ideas about and his theories on painting evolved illustrating what Davis called the “amazing continuity” of his art.
