The Marsden Hartley Coloring Book allows users of all ages to engage in the play of form and composition in the works of the renowned American Modernist painter. The Vilcek Collection includes significant holdings of Hartley’s works, from geometric sketches to intense landscapes and still lifes. The visual diversity of works created by Hartley over his lifetime provides an intuitive canvas for you to explore your own ideas of color. Deriving subjects and forms in his work from his extensive travels in Europe and North America—and from the natural world of his home in Maine—Hartley’s work provides an opportunity for reflection and contemplation.

The active meditation of coloring—whether for fun, relaxation, or as a creative exercise—is valuable. In creating The Marsden Hartley Coloring Book, it is the Vilcek Foundation’s intention to combine learning with the indulgence of one’s own artistic spirit. In a recent New York Times article, Martha Dorn, executive director of The Art Therapy Project, noted that, “Coloring books promote relaxation as they help users remain present and focused.” At a time when active meditation is so precious, the Vilcek Foundation is pleased to be able to share The Marsden Hartley Coloring Book with the public.
