
About the Object
This painting of a gas station in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, is dominated by a tree in the center of the composition and a row of telephone poles that pull your eye across the canvas and into the distance. The gas station, comprised of three white buildings with red roofs, spreads across the middle ground of the work, the “Esso” sign split by one of the poles.
Additional Information
The Collection includes six additional works by Dasburg. In Ledoux Street, Taos, New Mexico, (Harwood), c. 1922, he also included a telephone pole that leads the viewer’s eye into the distance. In 1918, Dasburg traveled to Taos, New Mexico, and by 1922 was spending most of his time there. In 1933, Dasburg married the poet Mary Channing “Marina” Wister in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and gifted her this painting.
