TIME Magazine has released its annual list of the TIME 100—the 100 most influential people of the year. Celebrating cultural icons, political leadership, scientific discovery, and leading artists, the TIME 100 recognition has become synonymous with greatness. The list of candidates considered for the TIME 100 are nominated by past TIME 100 honorees; the list was launched in 1999.

Yo-Yo Ma, recipient of the 2013 Vilcek Prize in Contemporary Music, has been named one of the TIME 100 for 2020. His series of online performances, “Songs of Comfort,” quickly became a movement in the spring of 2020. Musicians from around the world took inspiration from Ma, and through live-streamed performances and online concerts #SongsofComfort brought solace and connection through music to people in isolation. Ma, a cellist and the founder of the Silk Road Project, was nominated by renowned singer and songwriter Stevie Wonder.

Among the 2020 TIME 100 are also two honorees nominated by Vilcek Foundation alumni. Creative Promise Prizewinner Pardis Sabeti (who received the TIME 100 honor in 2016) nominated 2020 honoree Professor Zhang Yongzheng; Vilcek Prizewinner Chef José Andrés (who received the TIME 100 honor in 2018) nominated 2020 honoree Chef Gabriela Cámara.
