About the Object
The line from the edge of a poster serves as a vertical division: on the left side a predominately white background on which half a star seems to float; on the right, about a quarter of a man’s face.
Additional Information
Two related photographs, both also entitled Torn Signs (VF2015.05.02) and (VF2018.03.03), feature this same man, who has been literally defaced. Each photograph was printed from a different negative. Crawford moved along the wall as he photographed it, cropping the images on the spot rather than later in the darkroom. This work was included in the exhibition Ralston Crawford: Torn Signs at the Vilcek Foundation in 2019.
