About the Object
This landscape depicts the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in northern New Mexico. Cook combines a variety of earth tones, mainly umber and sienna, to invoke natural landscapes. This contrasts with the abstraction of the composition, creating dialogue between art and reality.
Additional Information
Cook lived in New York and New Mexico and traveled cross-country frequently, including a 1945 train trip from New York to New Mexico on the Santa Fe “Chief” with Georgia O’Keeffe.
