The Vilcek Foundation and The Arnold P. Gold Foundation are pleased to announce an open call for nominations for the 2021 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare. The award shines a spotlight on immigrant leaders in healthcare and recognizes the positive impact that humanistic care has on public health in the United States.
A shared initiative, the Vilcek-Gold Award embodies the respective missions of both the Vilcek Foundation and The Arnold P. Gold Foundation: to honor the outstanding contributions of immigrants to society, and to celebrate the positive outcomes that can be achieved when healthcare is practiced with humanism.
The 2021 award includes an unrestricted $10,000 cash prize and is commemorated with a heart-shaped trophy to be presented at the Association of American Medical Colleges’ annual meeting in 2021.
Nominees will be reviewed by a panel of distinguished public health experts, and the recipient of the 2021 Vilcek-Gold Award will be announced in June 2021. Nominators may submit any foreign-born person living and working in the United States whose work in healthcare, medicine, or public health advocacy demonstrates a commitment to humanistic values.
The inaugural Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare was bestowed upon Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha in November 2019. Dr. Hanna-Attisha received the award for her outspoken advocacy and leadership in response to the discovery of lead contamination in the water supply of Flint, Michigan, in 2014. Dr. Vivek Murthy, 19th Surgeon General of the United States, is the recipient of the 2020 award. The author of the best-selling book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World, Dr. Murthy is recognized for his holistic and community-centered approaches to care, and for his ongoing support to public officials in the United States throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Nominations for the 2021 Vilcek-Gold Award for Humanism in Healthcare may be made from November 17, 2020, through January 24, 2021, 11:59 p.m. EST. The nomination form and eligibility details are available at gold-foundation.org.
