Black pen sketched to form two long shapes on both sides of the canvas with a 'cavern' in between them.
Untitled 978 K, 1997–98, Ballpoint pen on paper, 77 x 60 in., Vilcek Collection

About the Object

Il Lee is known for using two types of lines—organic and geometric—which rarely get mixed. In his organic line pieces, the lines appear wispy and far-reaching, moving about in all directions across the composition. Lee’s Untitled 978 K is a great example of this type of work. At the centers of the forms on either side of the piece, the lines are indistinguishable and there is barely any light. As the eye moves up and outward, the twirling and curling lines begin to appear, reaching out across the cavern formed by the concentration of lines. In the areas where the lines are more sparse, particularly the center and the top, it is easy to follow Lee’s hand and the motion of his body across the paper.

Additional Information

Lee’s work is physical and meditative, and he has compared himself to a musician when moving across the page. In this piece, he creates a dialogue between not only himself and the viewer, but also between both sides of the paper, linking them together with minimal intertwining lines.
