Close up photograph of some of the girders that support the Coulee Dam. In 1969, Crawford traveled to the Grand Coulee Dam, on the Columbia River in Washington state, for the Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Department of the Interior.

In his photographs of the dam, Crawford focused on various elements of the structure, capturing them in detail in works like Penstock Leaves #1, 1971, in the Nelson-Atkins Museum; Coulee Dam, 1971, in the Whitney Museum of American Art; and [Steel Plate, Coulee Dam], 1972, in the J. Paul Getty Museum.
