About the Collection

The Vilcek Foundation Art Collection includes several collecting areas: American Modernism, Native American Pottery, Pre-Columbian Art, and Contemporary Art by foreign-born artists. The American Modernism collection tracks the development of American Modernism through the works of artists including Oscar Bluemner, Ralston Crawford, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Native American Pottery consists primarily of objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, including works of art by Acoma, Cochiti, Hopi, Kewa, Tesuque, Zia, and Zuni potters. Pre-Columbian objects originate from across the pre-Columbian world, with an emphasis on the art of Mesoamerica. Art by Immigrant Artists include contemporary artists such as Christo, Il Lee, and Ryo Toyonaga.

In addition to exhibitions on view at the foundation, we develop and organize traveling exhibitions and accompanying publications in order to build connections with cultural institutions around the world. The foundation also maintains a generous and active loan program including loans in support of exhibitions as well as long-term loans to institutions across the country from the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg; Philbrook Museum of Art; and Dayton Art Institute.

 

Provenance Statement

The Vilcek Foundation follows the regularly published professional guidelines of the American Association of Art Museum Directors. Researching the provenance of works in the collection is a fundamental and ongoing aspect of the foundation’s work. It is the foundation’s hope that making the collection accessible online will make possible important advances in scholarship and facilitate the emergence of new information related to the works in the collection.
