Alex Liu is the foundation’s accountant, overseeing monthly financial statements, balance sheet management, and general ledger maintenance. Working closely with the President on annual budgeting and planning, Liu coordinates all internal and external financial reporting and partners with colleagues across departments to support the foundation’s financial operations. He brings over 20 years of nonprofit accounting experience, with deep expertise in financial reporting, investment accounting, ERP implementations, audit, Form 990 filing, and process automation.
Liu came to the United States from China at age 13. His path reflects the resilience and drive that the Vilcek Foundation celebrates in immigrant contributors across all fields. Before joining the foundation, he served as assistant controller at the Educational Records Bureau, where he partnered with the CFO on financial reporting, external audits, and payroll compliance, and developed board-level materials for the Audit and Budget Committees. Liu also spent nearly 14 years as assistant controller at the Natural Resources Defense Council, where he managed an accounting team with day-to-day operations, audit, and financial statement preparations, oversaw investment accounting for a $400 million consolidated endowment, led a major ERP implementation, and built real-time financial reporting tools.
Liu holds a BS in accounting from Hunter College and an MS in computer science from Pace University. His dual background in accounting and technology informs a practical, systems-oriented approach to financial stewardship by emphasizing accuracy, efficiency, and transparency in service of the foundation’s mission.
