hef José Andrés has long been a champion for immigrants and refugees, through every forum available to him—he has been an outspoken critic of nativist policies, he has embraced American multiculturalism through the 28 diverse restaurants he owns, and he has even dropped bars on Smule advocating for immigration reform.
Now, just in time for the Fourth of July, the chef and former Vilcek Prizewinner has teamed up with Carnegie Corporation to celebrate America’s #GreatImmigrants with a short video about his own experience immigrating to the U.S., and what it means to him to be a citizen.
“I do really believe that the new American dream is to provide for others you don’t know, the same [way] you’re dreaming to provide for yourself and for the people you love,” he says.
In addition to José, Carnegie Corporation is calling out 38 other foreign-born individuals from around the world who have made tremendous contributions to American literature, entertainment, business, government, and science—such as actor Liam Neeson, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Nobel Prize-winning economist Daniel Kahneman, and MacArthur Fellow and astrophysicist Nergis Mavalvala.
